Today we had a day brief with Alec Dudson from Intern Magazine. Before we began the session Alec had a quick chat with us and gave a short presentation about him & intern mag.
- He first interned at Boat magazine (each issue goes to another city)
- Domus magazine - Milan ( 2 month internship )
- Decided there wasn't a magazine that engaged with the this style of work.
- Intern zero addition - 12 pages
- Kickstart - Intern Magazine
- Dazed Digital , Mashable , Bullett , dezeen , fvf, Nice < Press Intern magazine made.
- Issue one - 144 pages
- Adverts designed by them.
To start the day brief we got our selfs into groups of five. I chose to work with Vicki, J'nae, Jordan Harrison and Beth Dalzell. We first looked some existing independent magazines that Alec brought in he also provided us with a list of things we should consider for our fictional magazine and a list of different categories of magazines.
We looked in to a range of different independent magazines. The magazines we found most interesting as a group were the travel magazines. such as another escape.
Next we made a list of possible themes for the magazine. The theme that we were drawn to as a group was travel and culture magazines.
Our Concept:
Audience
-Supports their local independent shops
-Spiritual
-Independant
-Holistic
-DIY
The next task was to produce a front cover of the magazine to present to the rest of the group.
We split our group in half Beth Jamie and Jordan looked at a possible logo and myself , Jnae and vicki looked at some photography images and something we good use to put the logo on top for our front cover.
Examples/images of the people who we would feature in our magazine who life 'off the grid':
Imagery research for the magazine:
Front Cover Image:
'We focus on handmade/hand crafted elements, we use recycled paper we have a seed page so you can grow your own seeds. More of a tactical feel. Hand bound spine. Natural colour scheme.
The content suits a bi annual format as it has a lot of content & is well researched.
Binding-
This is the binding we would have as its simple and gives the publication an organic feel.
This is the hand rendered logo by Jordan Harrison. The logo type was an important aspect of the magazine, It couldn't be too structured and had to represent the brand. The logo is also in a triangular shape that could represent a tree or roof, both things that will be involved in the magazine.
Magazine cover:
This is the finished cover. I am really happy with the out come I think it portrays our message very well and has a slight etherial dreamy connotation.
Kick Starter Campaign:
We decided as we would need sponsors from big companies that national geographic would be the perfect one. We also found a video of Mick Dodge. A guy who lives off the grid in america in the forest living only off the land. We felt like having such a big company behind our kick start campaign would give people the trust in us and help us start our independent magazine especially using this video people can really see how people live happy not living in mainstream society.
